In addition to sculpting and the creation of smaller metal sculptures, painting on canvas is an expression of his artistic work. The contextual reference to architecture comes to the fore again and again in Baschek&#8217;s painting. Committed to the constructive thinking of architecture, he paints in the spirit of concrete art: clear colors and constructive surfaces form the self-referential premises of his painting. Negating the principle of mimesis, the imitation of nature, color means only color, surface only surface. In his pictures, in which geometric shapes make up the central pictorial construction, the painter dispenses with any illusion of space. As a painter, Gerald Baschek almost completely ignores the depth and spatial dimensions that are part of his everyday work as an architect.
