Les d\u00e9buts de son travail montrent des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences claires \u00e0 Klee. Ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;en 1958 qu&rsquo;il cr\u00e9e ses premi\u00e8res images mat\u00e9rielles. Ses images monochromes repr\u00e9sentent un aspect central de son travail, tout comme la disposition de gros clous de fer \u00e0 cheval en rang\u00e9e sur des panneaux durs ou des panneaux de particules. En plus de ces \u0153uvres non figuratives, Schlenker a \u00e9galement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 des aquarelles, qu&rsquo;il consid\u00e8re lui-m\u00eame importantes car elles donnent un aper\u00e7u d&rsquo;une \u00e9poque r\u00e9volue. En plus de son propre travail artistique, il a travaill\u00e9 comme collectionneur.
